about

This is the first ever compilation of Fang Over Fist Records. The track list ranges from 2016 to 2022, and is composed entirely of songs produced by Cecil Tso, aka Tsoh Tso (formerly known as Whatever Cecil). Here you'll find previously released songs, exclusive mixes, and some new tracks ahead of their release. Please share, download, gift, burn, and bootleg this; whatever it takes for it to reach the world.

Flowers for our friends:

It was hard narrowing down these tracks. We have over 80 songs featured on our Bandcamp, and I like all of them. When it came down to picking the song list I had to consider the aesthetic, the vibe, and if things would transition smoothly. I essentially tried to curate a mixtape, and because of this process I had to omit a lot of my favorites. That being said, thank you to everyone who's ever worked with us. Fang Over Fist at it's root is three acts: An Illustrated Mess, Tre Orona, and CoCec. The growing branches vary on who it is, and whenever they're ready, but those three acts keep us in the ground. By ourselves we can become redundant, and that's where our peers come in to freshen things up, and add new life. Whether they were album cuts, or one off singles we appreciate each, and every collaboration. Your works are what made this compilation possible. Truly, thank you.

Flowers for Alex:

2022 marks the ten year anniversary of "A Lack of Creativity" by An Illustrated Mess, however we're choosing to skip the first four years of our journey. 2016 was when we decided to create FOF as an outlet to self release our music, and it was also the year we first started working with Alex Begay. Today Alex has become synonymous with our sound, but prior to us we knew him for his work with Them Savages, Child Left Behind, and his own band Downplay; he was already an underground legend. We've never set foot inside a professional studio, but his mixes make our bedroom recordings sound bigger than they are. While not explicitly credited, Mr. Begay would have producer credits on most things. He's thrown out mix ideas, re-crafted arrangements, and contributes more than he probably knows. We've worked with Hip-Hop legends. We've had placements in festivals, radio, and documentaries. It's been a slow journey, but we've been fortunate to have accomplished some cool things. None of that would have been possibly without the quality that Alex brings to the table. Thank you Alex. We all appreciate you.

Flowers for Deidra:

I first met Deidra Peaches when she, and Jake Hoyungowa hired me for a Youth Mentorship position back in 2015; when Paper Rocket Productions existed. I was under qualified, but someone had to drop out, and our friend Ben vouched for me. We spent two months traveling around, and essentially camping throughout the Navajo Reservation. Years later that summer has turned into a lifelong friendship. The more she does, the more she accomplishes. I'm certain the day will come when we all see her at an Oscar's ceremony, but in-between all her big steps she finds the time for us. Deidra has worked with us on music videos, but she's also done so much more; she's gone on the road with us, we've picked each other up as people, and she's always been a good friend. Because of Peaches we've been to film festivals, contributed music to proper films, and our music has a visual quality that not everyone has the luxury of showcasing. Thank you Peaches.

Flowers for Fang:

It's hard to do Hip-Hop where we're from. More often than not we have to fight, and make things happen. It's very seldom that something can happen organically. It can be discouraging, and overwhelming, but something like this collection is a testament to the work. The process is different for everyone, but in our own way, we're doing it. The music we make has touched base around the planet. While none of us are international acts, all of us have an international audience. We've showcased Flagstaff, and our part of the Rez in our way, from our perspective. Through all the ups, and downs we've crafted something special, and I'm proud of us. Clint, Tre, and Colin; thank you.

Flowers for our supporters:

To be completely honest I don't think we would still be doing this if no one was listening. We're artist first, and foremost, but part of art is showcasing it. We've made the Bandcamp Top 8, but we've also never even placed at all. We've performed for sold out crowds, but we've also performed for only the staff. Throughout the years we've had our fair share of ups, and downs, but we continue to push forward, and try our best. Thank you for continuing to rock with us. It means the most.

Flowers for our Diné:

Clint, and I first had the idea to form a group when we were both fifteen years old in Highschool. A lot has happened since then, but it's interesting to look back on. This was before the internet fully became what it is now, and independent music was harder to find. Indigenous Hip-Hop was existent, was almost non existent to the extent it is now. It would have been very easy to get discouraged, but we had OG's reach out, and motivate us. Kreme Infinite, Randy Barton, Cloudface, and DJ Smog; thank you for having our back on day one. We appreciate everyone else who has come, and gone since then. Ahéhee'.

Final notes from Tsoh Tso:

It's truly an accomplishment to be able to put this project together. I've always wanted to do the classic, feature heavy producer album, and I imagine this is the closest I'll ever get to it. It's amazing to have artist from all over the country, and even overseas featured here. It's amazing to have literal Hip-Hop legends featured here. For the longest time I produced everything out of necessity, but going forward that's going to change. As our tree grows so do our branches of collaborators. My hope is that volume two will feature very few tracks produced by me, and will be mostly other producers. Until then I hope everyone enjoys this snapshot of our lives.

Thank you.
