This is Cecil Tso. The name "Whatever Cecil" is a way of rebranding myself for solo work outside of An Illustrated Mess, CoCec, and whomever else I'm working with at the time. In 2017 I released my first solo EP under my real name, titled "If We Were Gone". There was an intimacy, and maturity to that project that I don't ever want to compete with so now I am adopting a pen name. Most of the names I could think of were silly so the name "Whatever Cecil" is a way for people to know me, while being able to make fun of myself.
All three of these songs were made at different points in time. "Prayers" and "Solace" were made in 2017 while I was living in Albuquerque, NM. "Fires" was made after I moved back to Flagstaff, AZ in 2018. Initially these were not meant to be pieced together as an EP, but as time went on that's what happened.
After moving back to Flagstaff I experienced a lot of death. I lost two Grandparents, my friend Jake, and my dog over the course of a year. That took a big toll on me mentally, and physically which I'm still trying to work through. During that grieving process was when these songs started to make sense together. The EP plays out like my own grieving process.
"Prayers" is the heaviest song. It's the first hit of grief, and sorrow. Falling into a pit of depression for weeks to months.
"Fires" is a little more up beat. To me it's slowly starting to feel active again. I'm still fragile, and emotional, but more able to function day to day despite the fact my spirt isn't all there.
"Solace" is the closure. It's the end when I'm more or less "normal" but ultimately changed. I'm never the same as I was, but I try, and continue to move forward.
The cover art was done by Anna Kohlweis. She is a multi media artist from Vienna, Austria. The process of working with her was interesting. I gave her complete creative control, and only sent her the music. We didn't plan or discuss what the visual would be, but to my surprise it worked out lovely, and represented what this EP means to me. She took elements from my life. The truck was my Grandpa's, the mountains in the back are reminiscent of the San Francisco Peaks, and the floating dog while different, reminds me Lyla. Her artwork brought everything together full circle.

Innovative rhythms, current topics and the instrumentals have a cool mix of modern synthesizer sounds and old school samples. So co-signs from industry veterans are cool, but E-Turn doesn't need them to add validity to her skills. Jof
